{2018} Currently Vol. 1

03 January 2018

Hello, and welcome to the first post of my weekly Currently series! I did this religiously back in 2015 and finished all 52 posts but somehow fell off the wagon in 2016. I'm hoping that through this exercise I can hone my creativity and make sure I'm continuously writing.

Instead of Mondays, I decided to post this on Wednesdays. Here's hoping I can sustain this until the end of the year!

If January 1 sets the tone for the rest of the year, then my 2018 is off to a great start! We trooped to Mall of Asia Arena to catch the 7PM show of Disney On Ice: Everyone's Story!

It was the nth time I caught a Disney On Ice show, but it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. (ಥ﹏ಥ)

READING

I started watching Sherlock during Christmas break and I found it brilliant! So much so that I went ahead and bought this ebook for my Kindle.

WRITING

My journal is really too pretty for words. ♡

LISTENING TO

John Legend in preparation for his Darkness and Light tour in Manila! J and I already have tickets and I'm excited to hear him sing live.

SMELLING

Roses. I used to be drawn to citrus scents when I was younger, but now I prefer floral scents more, specially roses. I love my In Her Element Low pH Rose Gel Cleanser, Human Nature Hand & Foot Salve in Rose Bouquet, PULLACK Rose Blossom Serum, and the Rose Facial Mist Spray that J's Mom gave me.

WEARING

Gigi Hadid's exclusive collection with Maybelline. This line surprised me because the quality of the products are really good! I deeply regret not getting the Liquid Strobes that are now sold out in all stores, forever. :(

THINKING

My next OB appointment is happening this week, and I'm hoping everything will be okay.

FEELING

Worried, really, but I'm putting everything in God's and my OB's able hands.

LOVING

Gratuitous selfie because I LOVE my new LED mirror that also functions as a ring light. Thanks, Tita Judy! No need for bulky and expensive ring light set-up now!

WANTING

Cakes and pies and other desserts, but I can't.

NEEDING

After losing 10 pounds in three weeks through keto diet, I gained seven pounds back during the holiday break. I need to shed those pounds again, heh.

WISHING

Okay, last field to answer. This was challenging, but fun. I wish I can sustain this until the end of the year!

Thank you for reading. ♡

Hello, 2018!

01 January 2018

New calendar, new beginnings, new planner pages to fill, and a new blank slate to fill with more stories and memories. Happy New Year, y'all!

For 2018 I am still using my 17-month ban.do Agenda. I also started journaling again. These days my thoughts that are deemed too private for my blog are written down on my Kalocsa Marigolds Daycraft Flower Wow Lined Notebook I got from Scribe. Looking back, it's a shame I only managed to publish 70 blog posts last year when there were a lot of things worth blogging about. If you have been a long-time reader of my blog despite the lack of posts, I'd like to thank you for sticking around. This year I will make sure to write more.

There's value in writing things down. For 2017 I swore I will not buy a single lipstick the whole year, and I succeeded! At the beginning of 2015 I also said that by God's grace I will "fall in love", and I did. ♡

Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I feel like I spent 2017 letting things happen to me as opposed to proactively chasing after the things I want. This year, I would like to take charge again and shine.

This year, I will:

revive my Currently posts • write at least one short story (baby steps, baby) • finish reading at least 12 books • learn to operate my sewing machine and sew clothes for myself and my dolls • learn to cook • eat right • invest • save money • visit a new country • love more • do more • create more

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Happy New Year, everyone! *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
May 2018 be bright and glittery!

2017: The Year of Embracing

31 December 2017

What a year, this year.

I had a hard time thinking of the perfect word that can encapsulate what 2017 meant to me, until this word popped in my mind.

2017 was wrought with a lot of challenges, and I just felt so exhausted all the time. I don't know if it was because of the hormones I took for my myoma, poor diet, lack of sleep, or maybe I'm just getting old and jaded. Still, I embraced every day and every experience.

According to Instagram, here are my 2017 posts that got the most likes:

Pretty in pink at the Barbie Loves Plains & Prints launch | Oxygen x Bieber | Personal post about my weight gain
Personal post about my myoma | My ban.do Agenda | A selfie I felt proud of after feeling depressed due to my hormones
The cheesiest line my boyfriend ever told me | Another portrait | In theme OOTD at the Penshoppe DNMLab DIY Bar event
Of everything that happened in this crazy year, here are the things that I embrace the most:

It was my third time in Singapore already but this trip was very special to me because it was the first time J and I traveled out of the country together. This photo was taken by my friend Ed during our first night there. They say you can only know a person thoroughly after you go to a foreign place with him/ her. Well, I'm glad to report we both had an awesome week at the Lion City!

This trip was made extra fun by our friends Ed, JV, Ronnie, and Kayle.

I love them.

My most vivid memory was bursting into tears and full-on sobbing after seeing the HUGE aquarium at the Singapore Zoo. J tried his best to console me to no avail, other park visitors must have thought we were fighting! I don't know what came into me, I was just too overcome with emotion!

Told ya, fun!

Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes they sing and dance on stage and inspire you that if they can get through 2008 and look fabulous doing it, then you can get through anything. Britney Spears has been my personal hero since I was 12 years old and seeing her perform live is definitely one of my life's highlights.

From making sure I get a ticket to buying the perfect outfit to going to the concert alone, I embraced the entire experience and made my 12 year old-self proud.

This year is also the year I finally bit the bullet and started building my PANDORA charm bracelet, no thanks to an impulsive visit to the SM Aura store with my friend/ officemate Hannah.

I now have Jasmine's Signature Color Murano Glass Charm, Vintage K Charm (J's 2nd anniversary gift), Sun, Moon, and Stars Clip, and Globe Clip (in commemoration of my 5th anniversary with ARC Public Relations), and the other day I got the Pavé Wishing Star Charm from their Vertis North store. This way I’ll always have a wishing star anywhere I go. It’s also my good luck charm for the coming year.

Readers of this blog may notice a new section here --- Dollireum. It's where you can see my posts about my dolls, and I hope you don't get tired of the way I blabber about them. I started collecting again just this year and so far I have already amassed 27 dolls! That's three Monster High dolls, seven Ever After High dolls, and 17 Barbie dolls. Wew.

27! That's one more than the total number of dolls I had when I was little!

By the way, kudos to adult doll collectors especially those I follow on Instagram! (Follow my dolls' Instagram account, too, if you will be so inclined). It's not easy styling dolls' clothes and shoes, dressing them up, and posing them all for just one photo! It takes a lot of work and sometimes I get impatient, but then I look at them in their pretty clothes and everything's right with the [doll] world again.

In a bid to fully immerse myself in this, I also bought a sewing machine so I can make clothes not only for my dolls but also for myself. I am happiest when I make, and if I can make my own clothes and save a lot of money doing so then that would be great.

I didn't want to insert a somber tone in this post, but I guess if there's anything I learned this year, it's that we have to embrace every experience, even the bad. This year we found out I have myomas. We tried pills and injectables, and I even did keto, but sadly even though I lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time, the myomas only increased. We are now considering myomectomy and I am FREAKING SCARED. I can't even tell you how many times I cried to my boyfriend, to my parents, to my friends, to my boyfriend's mom, and to myself in private. I don't know what the future holds but I am praying that everything will be okay soon.

As always, I couldn't have done anything without my family.

They love and accept me unconditionally, and I am thankful. I know we can't choose the family we're born into but if I will be given the chance to choose, I will still choose them.

I am also very blessed to have an extended family through J. I don't know what I did to deserve their kindness and love, I'm just sitting here going, "happy, thank you, more please."

And to My Love, my one and only, I am so glad to end the year and welcome another one with you. My younger self used to dream of a love like this, and I wish I can tell her to just hang on, what they say is true: it will come when you least expect it. You came unexpectedly, and suddenly I was home.

I love you, J.

After going through old posts and photos to craft this year-ender, I am reminded that 2017 wasn't that bad, after all.

By the way! At the beginning of this year I swore that I will not buy a single tube of lipstick all year. It was VERY challenging but hey, what do you know, I SUCCEEDED! Now I'm already thinking which lipstick to get tomorrow as reward to myself. Kidding! Maybe.

Gracias and ciao, 2017.

Meet Barbara Kristy, my Barbie® Classic Camel Coat Doll.

28 December 2017

I never thought this moment would come. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this was possible. I really didn't think I'll be sitting here, typing these words.

I FINALLY HAVE MY OWN SILKSTONE BARBIE!

She's the Barbie® Classic Camel Coat Doll. Isn't she a beauty?
For the BFMC’s 2016 “New Classics” Collection, Barbie® wears a camel trench coat with wide lapels and fine details, leopard skin pencil skirt, chic black turtleneck top and tights. Fabulous city-perfect accessories include big sunglasses, golden hoop earrings, black booties, and crossbody handbag. Features the new posable Silkstone® body for endless posing possibilities!
I got her as a Christmas gift from my boyfriend, which makes her doubly special. ♡ And because I want to show her off, here are [a lot] more photos!

The Barbie Fashion Model Collection dolls come in this beautiful classic box with the name of the doll displayed at the bottom part. They're changing it up for the new dolls, displaying the photo of the doll in front. I think I prefer this version more.

I remember how my hands shook while unwrapping this gift on Christmas, hee.
UGH! SO BEAUTIFUL!
I love how they cover the face and hair with a dainty lace net.
A peek at what's inside her coat: a fuzzy leopard print pencil skirt!
Seriously, I want human-sized version of these boots.
She comes with a pair of shades to keep the glare of the haters away.
Another detail they put special thought into: she's secured into place with ribbons instead of elastics. Not only do these make her look more premium, they're also less constricting and easier to remove and put back.
She is quite heavy because of the material but a fellow doll collector advised me to treat her with special care because she is quite delicate.

And now, out of the box photos because I'm an adult doll collector who believes dolls should not remain inside their boxes forever.

Her hair (golden blond with soft curls), makeup (THAT EYELINER, shimmery shadow, eyebrows, lashes, THOSE RED LIPS), outfit (coat, black turtleneck, leopard pencil skirt, leggings, boots) and accessories (gold hoop earrings, shades, black bag) are ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! Everything is chic and on point!

You can still see the plastic, put there to protect her silkstone body from being stained by the fabric of her clothes.
Red fingertips. Classic.
Faux leather bag with gold hardware ughhh
Her bag comes with three compartments! I can put my doll-sized MacBook and Erin's journal, pencil, and phone here!
I am so amazed at the thought they put into each detail, like the coat's buttons!
Look at that slit at the back of the skirt!
Heels so thin it should be classified as a weapon.
Isn't she perfect? I mean I love all my dolls but gOSH HERE I AM SPAZZING OUT OVER HER!

By the way, I have decided to name her Barbara Kristy. She is a #girlboss and is never seen in public without lipstick on. The world of PR suits her and her no-nonsense attitude.

Watch out, world!
What do you think of her? Did she capture your heart the way she did mine?

Thanks again for this beautiful gift, J! I will treasure her foreverrr. ♡

Movie Review: Siargao

23 December 2017

This may sound cliché, but reading Elizabeth Gilbert's book Eat, Pray, Love was life-changing for me. It helped me get over my broken heart when I first read it seven years ago. It was not an instant fix, mind you, but it reminded me that "You were given life; it is your duty (and also your entitlement as a human being) to find something beautiful within life, no matter how slight." I yearned to go on the same sabbatical as Liz did and travel and experience new things alone, but frankly I didn't have the funds nor the guts. I lived vicariously through her memoir and escaped my then reality through her inspiring story and then one day I just woke up, felt my heart, and went, "Huh. Finished with that."

Such is the the theme of the MMFF 2017 entry Siargao starring Jericho Rosales, Erich Gonzales, and Jasmine Curtis-Smith: escape peppered with romance and a healthy sprinkling of environmental awareness and tourism promotion. As you can already tell, I loved that little nod to Eat, Pray, Love inserted in one of Jericho's lines.

I joined a special preview of the movie the other day and felt I was transported to the Surfing Capital of the Philippines. I felt the itch to go to the beach right after and even though I have zilch knowledge about surfing despite going with my friends a lot of times before, I felt like I can paddle out to the line-up and pop-up. I mean, I'm a city girl but I do love the beach and getting sand on my toes and swimsuit.

Jericho plays the role of Diego, the Siargao native who went to Manila to follow his dreams of becoming a musician, but then goes back when things in the city get awry.
Erich plays the role of the brokenhearted video blogger Laura who travels to Siargao alone to try new things after turning her boyfriend's (played by Enchong Dee) marriage proposal down.
Jasmine plays the role of environmental activist and Siargao native Abby. She turned Diego down five years ago, resulting to Diego leaving the town.
Seriously, these three are so nice to look at on the big screen, they should star in more movies. They're so beautiful and golden and glowing, I held my breath at almost every scene they were in. Bonus: they're also very good actors!

You see what I mean? JUST HOW FREAKING BEAUTIFUL IS THIS SHOT?!
I wish I can tell you the plot but I don't want to spoil the movie for you. You have to catch it on the cinemas when the Metro Manila Film Festival opens on December 25 because not only are we treated to a not-so-typical romance with characters that make you want to root for them AND an ending that's not a cheap cop-out, we are also blessed with great aerial shots of lush greeneries and sprawling seas. Cinematography is A+++ but I guess if you're shooting a place as beautiful and as picturesque as Siargao then the job just became 100% easier.

All the actors gave excellent performances but Erich was a standout. I loved her in her show Katorse before and this movie just cemented her status as cinema's sweetheart. She lends such a vibrant electricity on screen and the camera just loves her, her pretty face, and her flawless delivery of her lines. I truly believed she was really a vlogger and it made me want to follow her Youtube channel and see what she's been up to after her trip to Siargao.

A friend in high school told me before that you can never get lost so long as you know how to read. That almost became my mantra when I decided I wanted to travel alone, but then I realized I couldn't get through with it because I was too scared. I'm thinking if I would still want to give it a try. Who knows, maybe I can still try it someday.

As compared to other movies' blatant promotion of sponsors, Siargao's approach is very methodical and understated. References to eco-awareness events and cleanliness drives were subtly inserted into the film, and I also loved the environment PSA at the end.

I hope you can catch Ten17P’s latest opus, the Metro Manila Film Festival 2017 entry Siargao by Direk Paul Soriano. Treat yourself and your loved ones with this beautiful movie starting December 25 and who knows, you might just be inspired to escape to Siargao yourself.

Krissyfied Sews

19 December 2017

I've always wanted to learn how to make my own clothes but I never got the chance. I only know how to sew by hand; sewing machines have always intimidated me. Some of my fondest memories as a child include visiting my Grandma's favorite seamstress, going through her magazines and helping my Grandma choose clothes to have made, and get mesmerized while watching her and her big, bulky, and manual sewing machine at work.

Because I want to keep chasing after things that I know will make me happy, I fulfilled one of my Christmas wishes and got myself a sewing machine. Thanks to the Lazada sale, I got a Sew Simple sewing machine for only Php 999.

Considering the price and the fact that this is a beginner machine I was quite happy with the reviews I read. Note that I don't have a single idea on how to make sewing machines work. I intended to get it while it was on sale and just learn my way through it. I acknowledge that I might be being overconfident but I'm crossing my fingers that this machine won't go to waste.

Yesterday, after J's birthday lunch, we passed by Fabric Warehouse to shop for fabrics. One of the sales assistants was not too helpful but we lucked out with the other one who said nothing should stop me from getting fabrics I want since my dolls (that I also want to make clothes for) don't have the capability to complain anyway. Heh.

I ended up with half-yard cotton fabrics in blue-green, mint green, lavender, and light pink. No matter what I end up making with them, at least the colors complement one another.

Next time, when I already know how to use my sewing machine, I'll get stretchy and sheer fabrics in yummy colors.

I'm also feeling a little confident because you can learn almost anything online nowadays. The interwebs is a treasure trove of tutorials, free patterns for clothes for myself and my dolls, and tips and tricks I wouldn't have known otherwise! Chelsea directed me to the withwendy Youtube channel and I AM SO INSPIRED!

Now I want to just stay home and sew.

I just hope this is not another one of my old hobbies I picked up and forgot about. Eep.
