Hello, I have myoma.

21 May 2017

What a roller-coaster ride this week has been.

It all started when my Mama said I should probably see an OB-Gyne for my tummy. She had myoma before and had her uterus removed along with it. I've actually noticed my stomach getting bigger but I was in denial, blaming my love for sugary treats and rice and telling myself I will just exercise more. Having my mom call me out on it was a wake-up call that I could not ignore it any longer, so I took half the day off work last Tuesday to go to my first OB-Gyne appointment since I turned 30.

Hello, St. Luke's Medical Center. We meet again.

Side note: since I was there already, I figured I should also have my moles checked by a dermatologist. Because when a stranger at the mall tells you to have your moles checked if you don't want to suffer the same fate as his wife did, you go and have your moles checked. Good news: my mole at my right shoulder is completely harmless while my mole on my right leg turns out to be not a mole but a skin nodule that can be removed topically.

Back to my OB-Gyne story. The doctor performed a Pap smear on me and also ordered me to have a trans-vaginal ultrasound. Yes, both procedures were as painful as they sounded. I was comforted by the fact that I didn't have to shell out more than P10,000 for the two lab tests and the doctor's consultation fee because they were covered by our company health card. Thank you, ARC PR.

One of my character flaws is that I think too much. As expected, I spent the next couple of days agonizing over the results and dreading the worst.

When Friday finally rolled around, I used my lunch-break to go back to St. Luke's for the results.

Good news, I don't have cancer. Bad news, I have myoma.

I have four of them.

Four nasty, needless, useless nuisances.

Two of them are quite large while the other two are smaller, but all of them are located inside the muscles of my uterus.

The doctor's recommendation is for me to have a Laparoscopic myomectomy, a minimally invasive procedure where the surgeon accesses and removes fibroids through several small abdominal incisions. But that would cost me upwards of P300,000(!!!) so it's not an option I can just choose anytime soon, aside from the fact I wouldn't really want any apparatus messing with my reproductive system before I'm ready to get pregnant and give birth.

Her other solution is to have a Caesarean section but personally that would be even worse because aside from injecting anesthesia on my spinal cord and cutting my abdomen open to get to my uterus (I get weak in the knees just typing that down), it would take me about two months to recover from the operation. It would also take longer before my body can recover enough to be able to get pregnant and give birth.

I cried in front of the doctor, cried in my Uber on the way back to the office, cried to my officemates, cried on the way home, cried to my Mom, and cried while messaging my boyfriend and close friends.

I was so scared that I won't be able to have a baby.

I mean, I'm not ready to have a baby now but, you know, it's nice to know that I can when my partner and I decide we're ready.

I was so scared and worried and my tears wouldn't stop coming.

It was exhausting.

My boyfriend maintained a clear and rational head through all this and proposed that we see his aunt who's also an OB-Gyne for a second opinion.

Our Saturday, usually spent on a movie- or shopping-date, was spent falling in line at the hospital, waiting for our turn so her aunt doctor can see me.

After checking my lab results and asking me the necessary questions for her diagnosis, she asked that my boyfriend go in before she discuss my condition and her recommendations since she said he will just bug her about it. It was sweet. :)

Dr. Mangubat was able to clearly explain everything to us and patiently answered all our questions about my condition. She explained that a woman may develop myoma not necessarily because of her diet nor her lifestyle; it's just something that decides to pop up without any known specific causes. The good thing is I was able to have it detected early. The best part? She assured me I can still have a baby.

She enumerated all options available for me given my current state. It was a complete relief to hear her say I didn't need to have any apparatus anywhere near my uterus as she doesn't see the need to operate on me, seeing as how I don't suffer the other symptoms that require immediate surgery. What a complete joy to breathe a sigh of relief after holding my breath the rest of the week.

I'll start medication when my next cycle starts, and I'm crossing my fingers and praying to God that all goes well.

I need to stop eating a lot of my favorite foods (like ube, dried fruits, and soya, among others) but that's a minor inconvenience I'm willing to go through if it means it can help shrink these four nuisances.

My enemy now is the TRO against birth control in the Philippines, but I guess we'll cross the bridge when we get there.

Through all these, I am thankful for my family and friends and my boyfriend and his family. What are the odds that I would have this condition and then have a boyfriend whose aunt can help? We are connected by an invisible thread, and I am so thankful this intangible string of fate led us to where we were supposed to be.

I can enumerate the many instances that prove we were destined to meet, but that's another story for another day. In the meantime, I hope you can pray with me for my quick recovery. I also hope you can sign this petition to lift the TRO. I am looking forward to getting better and healthier and, God willing, being a great Mom to my future kid/s. Thank you for reading. ♥

Review: Panasonic Facial Ionic Steamer

29 April 2017

Whatever list you look at, Public Relations remains a constant placer in the Most Stressful Jobs in the World category. I stay because I thrive on stress - when my fingertips tingle and my heart beats loudly during stressful instances, that's when I feel most alive.

However, I still need to de-stress to keep myself sane and to not suffer untimely death due to stress-induced heart attack. Heh. I read, I go to the movies, I watch light TV shoes, I journal, I ask my mom or my boyfriend (whoever's available) for back rubs, and on extreme cases I go to a spa and get a massage.

Panasonic recently gifted me with a Facial Ionic Steamer, and it's been a great addition to my home spa so far. ♥

The Panasonic Facial Ionic Steamer promises to not only cleanse your pores for dirt, it also leaves your skin feeling hydrated thanks to the nanoe™ particles it releases, penetrating the skin to make it feel refreshed and renewed.

Shopping for Real Techniques brushes from Sephora

28 April 2017

The first time I was able to use Real Techniques brushes was when my blogger friend Kim gifted with a Travel Essentials set that contained a foundation brush, a multitask brush, and a domed shadow brush. I fell in love with the brushes instantly and bring the set with me instead of lugging my entire brush set whenever I travel.

One of the most important things I learned in makeup school is that it doesn't matter how high-end or expensive your makeup products are if you don't know how to apply them properly nor have the right tools to apply them with. My train case is filled with a wide variety of products that range from drugstore to high-end, but I get the most out of them because I know which tools to use for each. Makeup brushes can get expensive, yes, but it is essential that you invest on those that do the job AND are durable to last several years of use and washing. Real Techniques brushes are affordable enough and are excellent whether you're just starting to build your collection or you're already a pro and you're looking to purchase more brushes just because.

During a recent Sephora shopping session, I splurged on a few Real Techniques brushes.

These arrived in less than a week. I actually wasn't aware that the Pixiwoo sisters have released this many types of brushes already! It was so exciting reading each one's descriptions and deciding which ones to put in my cart. In the end, these won and now I'm going to share the descriptions of each one.

Second meetsary

25 April 2017

Two years ago today, I launched my short story Once Upon a Sticky Note, distributed as part of the Sweet Complications anthology thanks to Buqo and Mina's help.

Two years ago today, I also met this guy.

We stayed up until 2AM the next day talking about Batman, books, TV shows, and toys.

My life hasn't been the same since.

Review: Maybelline Powder Mattes by Color Sensational

22 April 2017

Maybelline keeps on releasing awesome collections after another, I can barely keep up! No complaints, though, especially after they released my favorite lipstick formula yet. Hello, friends. I'm here to talk about the Powder Mattes by Color Sensational from Maybelline New York.

Matte lipsticks are huge right now and I'm one of those who have been taken in by this trend completely, but even I admit how some of my favorite mattes feel dry and heavy on my lips. Worse, they leave my lips looking really parched. Eep, not a good look. When I first heard of the Maybelline Powder Mattes during the launch of #MaybellineSquadPH, I couldn't wait to try it out. And now I have five of the top favorite shades on my hands!

Here's a closer look on all five colors and my quick thoughts on each.

The PANDORA's box has been opened

21 April 2017

Chandeliers, cheesecake, and charm bracelets make me happy, says my blog's sidebar. It's not just an alliteration thrown in mindlessly; it's a fact. Today, I made myself extra happy by getting my very first PANDORA jewelry - a PANDORA Charm Bracelet in Sterling Silver

I only went to SM Aura with my officemate/ friend Hannah to eat lunch and possibly get milk tea, but I walked back to the office with a full tummy, a Stromboli to-go, and a paper bag from PANDORA.

Blame Hannah for being an enabler.

It's one of those rare expensive buys where I didn't feel instant guilt and remorse after, though. Probably because I've been wanting to start building a legit charm bracelet made of my milestones and it's only today that the stars aligned for me to do so.

Still, I've only just come from two trips out of the country and I should be replenishing my savings, so what was I thinking walking into a jewelry store, psyching myself up that I was simply there to "just look around"?

NO REGRETS. What, it's my birthday gift to myself, okay??

The truth is I'm a big sentimental cheese-ball. I'm a magpie pack-rat and I keep a lot of stuff for its sentimental value, not acknowledging the fact that I can barely sleep in my room anymore because of all the stuff lying around.

I actually wanted to get a charm bracelet at the Universal Studios in Singapore. There was a really pretty Swarovski bracelet I wanted to get and there was even a promo wherein you could get a tennis bracelet for free for an initial purchase of just 50SGD! I stopped myself though because I've already purchased a lot of books and I still needed to mind my budget for the next coming days. I regretted not getting it, but I'm much happier with my PANDORA now!

FaceBookIt: Better At Weddings Than You by Mina V. Esguerra

20 April 2017

Sometimes, a romance book hits all the right spots, and you are left thinking about it even days after you finish reading it. Sometimes, you even make a makeup look dedicated to it.

Hello, friends, this FaceBookIt entry is inspired by Mina V. Esguerra’s new book, Better At Weddings Than You.

In this story, there’s a wedding to plan. The bride-to-be is in love with the wedding planner who coincidentally is a friend from way back. The groom-to-be fires aforementioned wedding planner and hires our main character to take over a month before the wedding. Instant attraction. Clothes are shed. What now?

Happy 3, FAVORI!

19 April 2017

It was a productive first day back in the office for me today after almost two weeks of one quarter work trip and three quarters vacation. Public Relations is an industry that never sleeps so in that short span of time I feel like I already missed a lot. I spent most of the day catching up and reading my 112 unread emails and the latter part eating my heart out at a food tasting for our newest client. All was well.

Our vacation felt too short and I really wanted to stay some more, but a little part of me also looked forward to being in my work desk again. We transferred to a new office unit (in the same building) and I have a new work desk that I organized in my own way - serenity in chaos-style.

Aside from my toys and the creative mess I've made, one of my favorite work desk buddies is my FAVORI Egg Aerator. I've collected quite a few oils that I rotate according to my mood. I can say it has helped me tremendously by perking up my spirits even when I'm already stressed. I really love it and you should get one for your work desk, too!

In case you're interested, FAVORI is having a special Buy One, Get One Promo for all their mall customers tomorrow, April 20, in celebration of their 3rd Anniversary!

Wherever I'm going, I'm already home.

18 April 2017

I just came back from spending an entire week in Singapore with my boyfriend and friends. (Huge thanks to my sunshine and serenade-in-a-box Ed for hosting our stay!) It was such a fun trip and I would love to post more photos and share more stories about the places we visited as soon as I get more time, but right now I just couldn't let this day pass without writing a quick post. It's my first time to travel out of the country with Jeremiah so yay for another milestone!

10 April 2017

So... I turned 31 and didn't even think of blogging about it until four days after.

I guess that's how it is when you get older? You feel... less. I definitely feel more low-key these days. My boyfriend says I'm still a huge dramatic showcase, though.

I spent the weekend in Malaysia but it was for work so I didn't really get the chance to go around and explore Kuala Lumpur. That's fine. I'll have plenty of exploring to do this week. Tomorrow I'm flying again, this time to Singapore with my boyfriend and friends to visit my sunshine and serenade-in-a-box Ed. It'll be my third time in the Lion City but I don't mind because there's always something new to see.

Can't wait. ♥

This is a story about a girl named Bryttel

05 April 2017

Hello, I am Krissy, and today's my last day as a 30 year old lady.

When I was in sixth grade and was no longer a girl but not yet a woman, I saw a girl in pigtails singing ...Baby One More Time! on MTV and my life was never the same.

I got the casette tapes and CDs of her albums, I memorized her songs, I watched every hit chart closely, I bought all sorts of song hits and magazines with her on the cover, I hung up posters in my room, I collected stickers, books, and other merch, I watched her movie Crossroads on the opening day, I did everything short of going to another continent to watch her perform live. Aside from my studies and books, Britney Spears consumed all my waking days. I even forced my classmates to start calling me Bryttel, my amalgamation of our names.

I can't tell you how many times I watched my DVDs of Britney: Live in Hawaii and Dream Within a Dream. I was and am such a HUGE fan.

When 2008 happened, I was really scared she wouldn't be able to pull through. I dreaded seeing news about her downward spiral because I was expecting the worst. But look at her now.

It's Britney, b*tch.

Booking Ace Hotel and Suites via Traveloka App

04 April 2017

I love going out of town with family and friends. However, with the hassle of braving traffic jams, getting out of Manila and back, most of the time it doesn't feel like it's worth it anymore. Thankfully, staycations have become more popular now; a sweet escape without having to go very far. All you need are discerning eyes, patience, and time to sift through a lot of choices and find the one staycation spot that best fit your preferences depending on location, amenities, and price.

But it's 2017 and well-meaning people have thought of ways to make our lives better, thus the Traveloka App. What a time to be alive.

I booked a one bedroom suite in Ace Hotel and Suites using Traveloka
For the uninitiated, the Traveloka App is one of the leading flight and hotel booking platforms in Southeast Asia, serving more than 100,000+ flight routes and 100,000+ hotels worldwide. As a one-stop traveling solution, it's very convenient to use Traveloka App since you can book your flights and hotels in one place. There are no hidden charges, too, so no fear of being shocked when you get your bill! What you see is what you pay. Aside from that, they offer a simple and complete payment method even if you don't have a credit card. The app is free to download on iOS or Android! My favorite part? Traveloka Member-Only Deal!

Traveloka homepage
Traveloka has a neat interface that only displays the information you need. Without unnecessary bells and whistles, it's very easy to navigate.

Happy almost birthday!

03 April 2017

As far as first workdays of the month go, today was pretty eventful.

I'm celebrating my birthday on Thursday and my officemates surprised us celebrators with a delectable chocolate cake and a pizza party!

Ten years later

31 March 2017

I've received a number of invites to give talks in different schools and universities but I've always had to say no because I'm terribly shy and awkward. What if I mispronounce some words? What if I say the wrong things? What if I blank out and forget what I am supposed to say? What if no one laughs at my jokes?? But when an invite from Mass Communication students from my very own Alma mater came, I couldn't find it in my heart to say no. I cannot stress how HUGE a deal this is for me.

Last Saturday found me back in the grounds of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, a place where I spent four years in in anticipation of the "real world".

Our college occupied the fifth level of Gusaling Lacson. Every day we had to go up and down the stairs because we didn't have an elevator. I literally worked my butt off.
After ten long years, I went back for Gear Up, a talk for incoming third year students about what it's like to work in Public Relations. My hope was to inspire some of them enough to want to belong in this industry someday. Crazy and stressful as it may admittedly be, there's no industry I would rather be in.

Sample Room presents: Pond's White Beauty Day Cream

19 March 2017

"My goal is not to wake up at 40 with the bitter realization that I've wasted my life on a job I hate because I was forced to decide on a career in my teens."
- Daria Morgendorffer

An additional goal is to wake up at 40 with the same skin I had in my late 20s.

For reference, I am 30 years old (going on 31 on April 6) and this is what my bare face looks like*:

*Photo taken using the front cam of a Huawei P9. No filters used but the photo's brightness was adjusted using A Color Story.

Whilst my skincare routine may still be considered "simple" and by some, I'd have to agree that it has become more complicated as compared to the simple facial wash-and-go routine I was used to. Nowadays, aside from my trusted facial wash, it involves exfoliation two to three times a week, facial masks at least once a week, toner, moisturizer, serum, facial oil, makeup remover, and SPF.

If you think about your skincare rituals from five to ten years ago, the basics were able to keep your skin clear and well-hydrated BUT if you take a closer look at our environment now and analyze what our skin faces each day — like pollution, harsher UV rays, and stress — you’ll realize that these basics are no longer enough. Today’s Filipina is in need of modern-day skincare solutions that can keep up with her ever-evolving skin needs and on-the-go lifestyle.

FaceBookIt: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

15 March 2017

“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

... goes one of the most remarkable lines in literature.

“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” indeed, but makeup never really did hurt anyone. But we are not here to discuss the merits of applying makeup, are we? We’re here today because I’d like to share with you a makeup look I created as inspired by my favorite book of all time.

I am talking about The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. This book has influenced me a lot and is a big driving force in my life, and I’ve lost count of how many collectible items I have amassed of the Prince and his friends, so I guess it’s fitting that my first FaceBookIt entry is dedicated to him.

For the uninitiated, FaceBookIt is a section in BookBed where contributors come up with makeup looks based on their favorite book covers. I've been a member of BookBed for quite a while now (in my bid to put myself out there more) and this is my first contribution. I was wary at first because the possibility of reading harsh comments can be daunting, but what the heck, right? I've seen really nice FaceBookIt entries in the site and it's a big honor to be part of it!

From Avon Teen Colors to Avon True Color

09 March 2017

aff_i?offer_id=5048&aff_id=1418I was in Fifth Grade when I graduated from using baby powder on my face and blending it with my handkerchief to using my very first "makeup," an Avon Teen Colors (now known as Simply Pretty) Pressed Powder in White. Add to that my Avon Teen Colors Lip Balm and I felt so pretty and mature, like I could take over the world. If a compact and a lip balm had that effect on me, just imagine how I felt when I was in sophomore year and my Mom bought me another Pressed Powder from the same Avon Teen Colors line - this time in Pink! I was beside myself in excitement for my first "blush"!

Blame Avon for igniting the spark of my interest for beauty and personal care products. My love for makeup now can be traced to that rush I felt the first time I opened my first compact, swiped on my first lipstick, and applied my first clear mascara - all from the Avon Teen Colors line.

A truckload of makeup later, I still feel like the same wide-eyed girl who's amazed by the boost of confidence a perfect swipe of lipstick can bring. Even with my current makeup collection, Avon cosmetics have a special place in my heart because of my early memories with the brand, even more so because they are shared with my Mom, who used to be an Avon Lady.

Yes, my childhood memories are laced with whiffs of Imari, Sweet Honesty, and Forest Interlude. This love was strengthened further back in 2012 when I was invited to visit their plant in Laguna and I witnessed Avon's stringent quality control, the efficiency and precision of their machines, their discipline when it comes to hygiene and sanitation, and the way they put importance to their employees' well-being and recreation.

I recently got the opportunity to revisit Avon and its rebranded True Color line and suddenly I felt like I was that wide-eyed girl again, curious of all the wonderful colors in front of me! Avon True Color promises true colors that are easy to apply and last for hours, fuss-free, and affordable.

There's comfort in familiarity with a brand that has been around since I was a tween, yet it's also exciting because of the new promises it holds.

A love letter to every woman I'm thankful for

08 March 2017

When I was much younger, I liked a boy but he said he couldn't pursue me as he was intimidated because I was "too smart". I was stumped because it was the first time my brains worked against me. He broke my heart then but it was okay, I didn't think he was ready for this jelly anyway.

Now, I'm happily involved with someone who's secure with himself and doesn't care about these things nor feel the need to downplay me and my abilities so he can appear superior. For what it's worth, he is smarter than me, so yay me!

So, if there is anyone out there who may be going through the same situation and come across this post by chance, listen to queen Emma Watson and don't be afraid to be smart. In fact, don't be afraid to be whatever you want to be. ♥

In celebration of International Women's Day, I would like to take this opportunity to pause and thank God for peppering my life with strong, supportive, and inspiring women who give more spice to my life.

I am thankful for my Lolas, my Mama, my Aunt Jean, and my aunts in the paternal side of the family for being my first role models growing up and for continuously guiding me until now, and my sister Kyla for inspiring me to become a better older sister so she can have someone to look up to.

I am thankful for Tita Judy, Chelsea, and Courtney for welcoming me in their family with open arms.

I am thankful for my oldest friends Niel, Carmela, Jellarmine, Dianne, and Aiza for sticking with me through the years. Months could go by without us seeing one another but it's always like no time has passed when we do get together.

I am thankful for all my teachers and professors for imparting their knowledge in and out of the classroom, in the same way I am thankful for all the authors, movie makers, writers, musicians, and artists whose works I enjoyed.

I am thankful for my officemates from my previous company for showing me what it's like to work with the best people a girl fresh out of college could work with.I stepped into adulthood alongside you.

I am thankful for my bosses Jenny Yrasuegui and Celine Gabriel-Lim for opening doors for me and for showing me the ropes in the PR industry. I am proud to have learned from you and be learning and working alongside you in this stressful and challenging (yet fun!) role of being a PR girl.
I am thankful for my friend-turned-workmate Alexandra. Work became easier when we became partners because we get each other. I am thankful I gave you a chance to be my friend. WOW.
I am thankful for my beautiful ARC PR workmates for making work A LOT MORE FUN and manageable and for taking my OOTDs upon request.
I am thankful for all the beautiful women with beautiful spirits I met in my line of work. You inspire me every day.

I am thankful for Anne and her tough love. I am thankful for my Breakfast Clubmates Chum, Ate Sheila, Ate Ahyen, and Ate Nina for making the time to still catch up whenever possible.

I am thankful for my blog friends especially Ana, Ava, and Sarah for the continued support not only in terms of my career but also for my personal endeavors. Your vote of confidence means a lot.

I am thankful for Mina V. Esguerra and the #romanceclass community for satiating my need for beautiful stories and happily-ever-afters.

I am thankful for Britney Spears, the Spice Girls, the Mean Girls movie, and the Schuyler sisters.

I am thankful for every important woman in my life that I forgot to include here only for the reason that I am so sleepy and it's 11:13 PM and I still need to wake up at 5AM for work tomorrow.

Happy International Women's Day! May there come a time when we wouldn't need to have a designated women's day because equality has already become the norm and not a privilege granted to a select few. ♥

Review: L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Gold Obsession Lipsticks

27 February 2017

Lin-Manuel Miranda didn't win, they made a blunder in announcing the correct winner for Best Picture, and Christopher Nolan wasn't even nominated for his work in The Dark Knight. Nope, I'm still not over it.

Still, the 89th Academy Awards was as glitzy and glamorous as expected and I couldn't help but attempt to bring even a speck of it on my blog. What better (and easier) way to do just that than with lipsticks?

Today I'm sharing my thoughts on the new L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Gold Obsession Lipsticks.

I don't know until when the metallic lipstick trend will stay but color me obsessed. Straight from the runways of Paris Fashion Week, L'Oreal Makeup Designer/ Paris brings Color Riche Gold Obsession, an opulent collection of lipsticks infused with real 24-karat gold. Perfect for night-outs when you want to look extra bold or instantly sophisticated, or for days when you need to sparkle. Literally.

Color Riche Gold Obsession offers four sophisticated shades with real 24-karat gold that gives a metallic sheen and subtle dimension on the lips. Keep on reading for my swatches and review.

#SKYTriviaNight: Everything Oscars!

25 February 2017

La La Land would be tough to beat I guess, but I really really really hope Lin-Manuel Miranda wins an Oscar on Monday just so he can grace us with another beautiful acceptance speech.

I mean, just listen to this:

One more time for people at the back:

Whenever I feel sad, I just watch my favorite acceptance speeches, cry, and immediately feel better again. Lin-Manuel's speech for Best Score at last year's Tony Awards is one of my top favorites.

The 89th Academy Awards is happening this Monday and you can catch the HBO Live Coverage starting at 8AM! If you're looking forward to the glitzy and glamorous side of it though, you can watch the E! Red Carpet coverage with hosts Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic as early as 6:30AM!

As a prelude to the Oscars, I got invited by SKY Cable to the #SKYTriviaNight with the theme Everything Oscars. It was held in Ludo Boardgame Bar and Cafe in Makati last Thursday night, in partnership with HBO, E!, and Geek Fight.

Ballet Manila presents: Don Quixote

24 February 2017

I went to the dress rehearsal of Don Quixote by Ballet Manila not knowing what to expect. I don't remember it being discussed in any of my classes so I walked in to Aliw Theater with no background information. All I know is that because it's Ballet Manila, then it is worth checking out.

Happening on February 24 and 25, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. and on February 26, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Aliw Theater, Don Quixote is known in the ballet world as one of the most technically challenging pieces ever created, with some of the choreography raising the already high international standards when it first premiered in 1869 at the Tsar's Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg. It is especially known for its compulsory quick and strong movements, high vertical takeoffs, one arm lifts, quick fouettes, quadruple pirouettes, and Kitri’s signature move, the Plisetskaya head-kick.
Don Quixote is the closing act for Ballet Manila’s 21st performance season. Set in Spain, the story tells the tale of Don Quixote, who decides to become a knight and embark on a journey to find Lady Dulcinea, a lover that he has only made up in his head. The ballet places special focus on the love story between Kitri and Basilio, a pair he encounters during his adventures. The production combines great acrobatic feats, lively music, colorful sets and costumes, and a lot of comedic elements. Specially for this run, Ballet Manila will bring in Kremlin Ballet Theater star and principal danseur, Mikhail Martynyuk, to play Basilio.
I was enthralled not only by the ballerinas and danseurs (Katherine Barkman and Rudy de Dios danced the lead roles in the tech rehearsal I watched) but also by the colorful costumes.

I hope you can take the time to catch Don Quixote by Ballet Manila!

Cultured and concert date

19 February 2017

Hello, we are Ana and Krissy. We've been friends for 10 years now.

Our hobbies include blogging, arts and crafts, reading, getting together at least once a year for our annual catch-up date, and watching reunion concerts. (Eraserheads, Hanson, The Cranberries, Vertical Horizon, and Sugar Ray, among others.) Yesterday, The Moffatts was added to that list.

My Saturdays are usually reserved for my boyfriend but we made separate plans for yesterday because I spent the whole day with Ana.

My Valentine

15 February 2017

My boyfriend is not the romantic type.

He's not big on grand gestures, he thinks Valentine's Day is overrated, he doesn't like flowers, and sometimes he loses track of dates and forgets monthsaries. This proves to be challenging for me at times because I'm a cliché. I'm all about the hearts and cheese, fam.

I acknowledge that his love language differs from mine and I have enough self-awareness to recognize when I'm being irrational so I have learned to manage my expectations.

And so when he does something out of the ordinary, these gestures are completely unexpected and doubly appreciated.

Yesterday, just a little after I gave up and accepted the fact that we wouldn't be celebrating Valentine's Day together, he surprised me in the office with flowers and took me out on a romantic date at The Wholesome Table (where we technically had our first ever date before watching Owl City's concert back in 2015).

I had a Yakitori Bowl and a Wholesome Mojito while he had a Grass Fed Beef Burger and a Be Strong smoothie.

A haiku

08 February 2017

Lost. A sea of cars.

We got into a car accident this morning. Another car bumped into the van I was riding (on my side, no less!) but thank the gods of traffic jams, we hardly felt the impact. Our driver settled things with the driver of the other car and we were back on the road in no time.

I don't even want to think of the other scenarios that could have happened. Instead I'm here, thankful that we didn't suffer even a single scratch from that incident.

So, yeah, hello everyone. I'm alive and well.

Drowning in lists and to do's.

We're preparing for three major events and a minor one scheduled this month, the first of which is happening tomorrow. I am drowning in lists of people I need to coordinate with, invite, and press information I need to collate and disseminate.

Sometimes I wonder why I choose this lifestyle, why I willingly go through all this stress that a career in PR brings. But then I talk to and connect with a lot of people and know their individual stories, and I am reminded why.

Inhale. Exhale. Wink.

Challenges notwithstanding, I am grateful I have hardworking and inspiring bosses, supportive officemates-turned-friends, and a Love that, with a single hug, makes me feel like I'm home.

In life as in liquid eyeliners, steady does it.

Krissyfied Shops: January 2017

29 January 2017

“Dark and difficult times lie ahead. Soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.”
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
There's a Harry Potter quote applicable for every situation. These are scary and turbulent times, my friends, and even though it may be difficult and dreary, may we discern the difference and choose to do what is right.

Anyway, the first month of the year is almost over, and I'd like to do a roundup of the things I purchased. A monthly list for this can be beneficial for me in the long run as I get to see collectively what I spent my hard-earned money on so that I can make better choices next time, for my storage space and wallet's sake.

I realize it's virtually impossible to list everything here as I don't want to bore you with what I ate for lunch last January 17 or even my weekly trek to the supermarket to replenish my snack stash so let me qualify this by listing down the things I purchased online as a treat to myself.

BeautyMNL is one of my go-to online shops when I'm bored, resulting to a wish list that's taller than me. I love it because:
  • it's a one-stop beauty shop that has a wide and expansive selection of both imported and proudly local products for the face, body, personal care, skin, hair, and nails, among others. It even carries accessories!
  • its interface is easy to use and understand (even to online shopping newbies).
  • it rewards legit reviews (check their review section Beauty by You) so real-life customers are more encouraged to share their experiences with the products you're eyeing, resulting to more informed choices.
  • it's quick! I checked out on a Sunday evening and got my orders Monday morning! Perfect for shoppers with low EQ like some people I know (read: me).
Here are the things I bought:

  1. Expert Class Foundation Oval 1 Brush by Pro Studio Beauty Exclusives - I've been wanting to try an oval brush ever since I saw a tutorial online using it, so this purchase made me giddy.
  2. Organic Eyelash/Eyebrow Growth Enhancing Serum by Leiania House of Beauty - I have long and thick lashes as it is but I'm still intrigued by the positive reviews even though it only costs P300!
  3. Pixi Glow Tonic by Pixi by Petra - This is almost always sold out so I jumped at the chance of getting a mini bottle the moment it became available. I'll be getting the bigger bottle if this indeed proves HG-worthy to me!
Aside from the maaaany products available on the site, you can also browse BeautyMNL's in-house magazine Bloom. The writers are really good and dispel the notion that beauty is just about fluff. I always enjoy their swatches and reviews.

SM North Chinese New Year

23 January 2017

It is said that for one to be continuously good in his or her craft, he or she must put in the work and the hours it entails. It’s a never-ending quest for development, thus training for it shouldn’t stop.

Without meaning to, I failed to pick up a paintbrush and paint the entire year of 2016 because of reasons. I was too busy with work, with my social life, with a host of different things that I missed tapping into my #KrissyfiedMakes persona and see where my palette of paints could take me.

It was because of this that I slightly panicked when we were asked to pick up our paintbrush and scroll and try our hands on Chinese painting by no less than the Chan Lim Family of Artists themselves at the launch event of their exhibit at the SM North EDSA The Block Atrium.

The Chan Lim Family of Artists has been engaged in the arts for close to half a century. In the present there are three generations of Chan Lim artists who use a wide variety of media, styles, and techniques to incorporate Western into Eastern art. The family continues to get involved in the arts by actively developing and promoting Chinese brush painting in the Philippines and abroad, and it was really an honor to have been invited to participate in this class and learn from them first-hand.

Most nights I don't know anymore.

19 January 2017

Exactly one year ago, I experienced one of the best nights of my life.

I remember how ecstatic I felt when my friend Niche broke the good news to me. I just came back from a work trip in Boracay then and all my exhaustion went away. I had to save up for my ticket (nothing less than VIP, of course) and spent the following months jittery and mildly panicky. I literally had no chill. I miss being this excited for something.

My boyfriend and I were broken up at the time so I bought the tickets not knowing who I will watch the show with. All's well that ends well though because we got back together. ♥ I really couldn't imagine watching the concert with anyone but him.

So, a year has passed since that monumental night. I guess it's a good time as any to reflect on the things that have changed since then?

Of dreams, love, and La La Land

15 January 2017

I watched La La Land with my la la love today and I may or I may have not shed a week's worth of tears inside the cinema while the movie's playing, outside the cinema immediately after the movie, and in Serenitea a solid six hours after we saw the movie.

My expectations were already a bit high seeing as how it won a lot of awards, but it exceeded even that. It's beautiful, it's fantastic, and - not that I need it to - it reminded me why I love movies. It's pure magic, y'all.

Now I just want to close my eyes and bask in the glorious beauty of this film, but I want to relive it here so that I have another pocket to tuck good memories in for when the rainy days come.

That dance sequence under the stars? Sigh. When you think about it, it's just a simple story about two souls trying to go after their dreams, but brilliant acting, wonderful sets and musical sequences, and film artistry elevated and reincarnated it into so much more. But that's not even my favorite part.

12 January 2017

I've told this story countless times to everyone who would care to listen and I've already shared this several times here on this blog, but allow me to tell you once again how I first started blogging legitimately.

Circa 2008. I was working at a BPO and with all the extra time I had I decided I wanted to learn how to do my own makeup. What you need to know about me is that when I become interested in something, I get fixated on it and stop at nothing to learn everything I can about it. The first thing I figured I had to do was read up on makeup, preferably from women I can relate to, so it follows that I should look for local beauty reviews and tutorials. That's when I found the blogs of Shen, Nikki, and Phoebe, among others. Product seeding and events weren't popular yet those day so all the reviews and tutorials they shared, they wrote using products they bought with their own money. I was enjoying my (now defunct) Multiply Journal then and its readership, but exploring Blogspot opened a completely different world for me! I signed up, and the rest was history.

To be completely honest with you, I've been feeling down the past few weeks and it's so difficult to find joy from things I loved doing before ⎼ reading and writing included. Me? Dislike reading? Amd writing? Why?? Believe me when I say I'm as baffled as you are. That lack of enthusiasm and time is one of the reasons why I haven't been able to blog as much.

And so this couldn't have come at a better time.

Maybelline chose me to be part of the Maybelline Squad, a group of bloggers they recognized for continuously supporting the brand. ♥ There are a lot of perks for being part of the squad, but my favorites are being given sneak peeks and a chance to try the products even before they get released in the country!

Review: Maybelline Vivid Matte Lipsticks Part Two

08 January 2017

When we welcomed the new year, I promised myself and the world wide web that I won't purchase a new lipstick until I'm done reviewing every single tube I already have. Yes, a girl can never have too many lipsticks, but this girl does not have a big enough storage room for all of them. If you know me and my love affair with lip colors, then you know how challenging this is for me. On one hand I'm glad to get usage out of all my lipsticks while freeing space as I let go of others, but on the other hand I am praying to the lipstick goddesses that no new can't-be-missed shades or collections are released to the market until I've made a sizeable dent in this undertaking.

Right now I'm just glad for the chance to rediscover old favorites and play with swatches.

What better way to start this habit than by sharing one of my favorite Maybelline collections from late last year? If you remember and if, like me, you liked the Vivid Matte Lipsticks and its bright and bold colors and intense pigmentation, you'll be thrilled to know that Maybelline released new shades under this line!

Maybelline's kits are always something to look forward to. ♥

How I made my own cushion compact

07 January 2017

I ran out of my Maybelline Super BB Cushion and I wanted to repurchase because I really love how easy it is to use and how it gives me a dewy glow --- but then I did the next best thing (or probably the better thing?): I made my own!

The It's My Cushion Case set in Althea Korea caught my fancy in one of my online window shopping sessions but I'm lazy and didn't really want to bother. However, seeing tutorials (from Beauty Geeks, xoVain, and Project Vanity) inspired me to mix my own concoction!

I got two cushion case sets and two extra sponges on my most recent Althea Korea treat yo'self haul and set to make the best cushion compact made especially for me using some of my tried and tested products. I finally got the chance to it on the last day of the holiday break, and I want to share the process with you!

Hello, 2017!

01 January 2017

New calendar, new beginnings, and a blank slate to fill with more stories and memories. Happy New Year, boys and girls! How did you welcome 2017? I hope it was with a lot of merry-making, joyous hearts, and full bellies.

One of my favorite things about welcoming a new year is jazzing up my chosen planner. Although this time around, I don't have a new planner to work with. I've been using a Moleskine 18-Month Weekly Planner and it's been great so far, mostly because it's Le Petit Prince-themed and because all the white space offers so much creative potential. (You can see some of my spreads by checking the hashtag #KrissyfiedJournal.)

For 2017, I also picked up this book by Adam J. Kurtz called 1 Page at a Time.

"Daily creative companion" sounds about right because it serves as a journal/ scrapbook that you can work on, one page/ day at a time. There are 365 prompts for each day of the year but you can also get off the grid. There are no rules! The book is yours, have your way with it! As for me, checking other people's creations gave me such a burst of inspiration that left my fingers tingling!
