"We're not broken just bent, and we can learn to love again."

03 March 2013

I am part of the MTV generation. That sounded totally uncool after I typed it but oh well... Anyway, I grew up with my nose stuck in a book while MTV runs in the background. I would anticipate commercial breaks every time my parents watched TV so I could switch the channel and see what segment was showing. Just kidding, I knew all the segments by heart: Most Wanted, Cribs, and Unplugged were some of my favorites.

I loved the colorful and artsy post-modern station IDs, the VJs (thank you VJs Sonia, Utt, Donita, Mike, and Jamie for sharing a big part of my childhood/ adolescence), the shows (they seriously need to make new episodes of DariaCelebrity Death Match, and Happy Tree Friends, but I bet they won't be as good so on second thought I think it's best to just let the classics be), and of course, the music videos

You gotta admit they don't make them like they used to. It seems like nowadays music videos just sell sex and scandal in order to sell. I'm not a prude, but I don't really need to see boobies or gyrating bodies every time I want to watch a song's accompanying video.

Do you remember Making the Video of the olden days? Remember when J.Lo got a wee bit excited in the set of Love Don't Cost a Thing and threw her bling just a little too forcefully toward the bushes that they needed to take a break so they could look for the lost jewelry? Ha I loved that. My favorite part was when the artists and directors would shout "It's a wrap!", I would automatically bolt upright in my seat and wait with abated breath for the video's world premiere. Oh man, I was (and still am) such a big nerd. I actually mourned when MTV Pilipinas shut downLet's take a moment of silence and sigh for the good ol' days.

Somehow though, a lot of gems still come through. This will be a little embarrassing, but my favorite music video used to be Stranded by Jennifer Paige.

The beach, the dress, the braids and the bracelets, the lights, and the loneliness - the video is perfection. (And yes, I know the song was originally by Plumb, but I liked Paige's version more, okay?) It will always be one of  my faves.

Now though, I have a new favorite. I've always loved Pink; she's an amazing singer, songwriter, and performer, and I still get goosebumps whenever I watch her mesmerizing Glitter in the Air performance at the 2010 Grammy's. I used to like Who Knew the most because I related to it so much, so it's amazing how she could release a new song I could relate to more. Here's her duet with Fun's Nate Ruess, Just Give Me a Reason.

Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second, we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
That we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again

I could go on and on about how much I love the lyrics and the melody, but more than those, the vocals and emotions behind the song and the video really drove the point home for me. It speaks to my soul on many different levels, and I love it so much my heart aches. For me, the video should always complement the song, and Pink really succeeded with this. I hope you're not being turned off by how weird I sound right now ha ha. Why I was able to relate to the song so much, I guess that's another story for another time. I wish Pink visits Manila for a concert soon. Goodnight, everyone. Take care of your hearts.

  6. I used to watch videos, but stopped because they started to all look alike, as you said.  It's nice to know there are good options now.

  7. Such a delayed comment. But lemme just say, LSS ko na ngayon ang kanta ni Pink at Nate Ruess. I love, love, love the song! Ang ganda pa ng melody.

And I'm proud to be an MTV kid as well. I would gladly wait for MTV Most Wanted hoping my request would make it (i tried to email... once!) and if my favorite videos would make the cut too. I loved Boyzone and Westlife because of them.
