And then I realized...

15 May 2012

It feels like forever since my last post! I spent majority of Sunday just sleeping in my apartment, and then yesterday I had a fun spontaneous fro-yo, dinner, then fro-yo (again!) date in TriNoma with my blog-friends Angel, Paul, Kelly, and Dan that I didn't get to go online all day (except on my phone, just to tweet how full I felt hee). I am currently drowning swimming in pending blog posts, announcements and releases, but I guess I just have to take each one post at a time.

Right now I just want to go with the stream of consciousness though. No set topics in mind, no complaints to lament, no epiphanies; just simply letting my fingers fly across the keyboard.

And then I realized I just really, really, really want to watch The Avengers again but I don't have anyone to watch it with.

And then I realized I don't want to entertain depressing thoughts about how I've been single for so long now that I've already forgotten when exactly I started treading the path of single-blessedness (-wretchedness?) after being part of a happy-mushy-cheesy couple for so long. You see, the dates of "being a couple" and "not being a couple anymore" are kinda blurred when it comes to pseudo-relationships.

And then I realized I love being free to do what I want, when I want them, but it doesn't hurt having someone to sometimes stop me from doing them because he wants me to spend time with him.

And then I realized I can take care of myself (I've been living alone in an apartment for a year and a half now) but it also feels good to have someone who wants to take care of me.

And then I realized it is better to be alone than have someone who doesn't really feel like being there. Really.

And then I realized it's pointless to feel mad at someone when they don't really know what they did to upset me in the first place. And if they're dense and insensitive enough to not know, then it's not my problem anymore.

And then I realized the stash of body lotion I have in the apartment doesn't have SPF and I need to buy a new one tomorrow, because, hello, Manila sunshine at 2PM? 'Nuff said.

And then I realized I said in the second paragraph of this post that I said I won't post any epiphanies and just let my stream of consciousness wander. And then it turns out I have quite a lot of things to say that I've just been too scared to say out loud.

And then I thought of the great conversation I had with my closest friend in the office, Terry, earlier. Life's good. ♥

"There is something to be said for the pure joy of dressing up and going out, of being young and alive in the city."

Dress - (I've already forgotten where I got it...) | Waist belt - YRYS
Bag - Parisian Polka dot socks - Jellybean | Booties - PILL

Heart charm bracelet - gift from my bestfriend Jerome | Archie and Friends charm bracelet - bought online
Angel wing connector ring - Anagon Collection

This is what I wore to the ice cream party I wrote about in this post. Thank you for taking my outfit shots, Angel! :)

Now I realize how pretty little things can cheer up an otherwise bleaky afternoon. Thank you for listening reading! ♥

Bloggers United Strikes Three!

13 May 2012

Third time’s the charm for the most anticipated fashion bloggers event in the country!

Bloggers United is staging their third bloggers bazaar this June 2 at the Grandview Events Place to once again gather Manila’s top fashion bloggers in one single venue outside of the World Wide Web. After holding two successful events last year, Bloggers United has easily become one of the most anticipated affairs for both fashion bloggers and readers in the metro.  More than just a bazaar, Bloggers United also partners with charitable groups to use and channel their influence in a positive manner.

Through the overwhelming power of social media and blogs in today's generation, the previous Bloggers United events have successfully joined forces with top fashion bloggers like Laureen Uy, Camille Co, Kryz Uy and many more to inspire their followers and to raise funds for various beneficiaries,  namely KIDS Foundation and GMA Kapuso Foundation. This time around, the event will benefit Operation Smile Philippines.

The event gets better and better every time! To make Bloggers United 3 even more momentous, top Indonesian fashion blogger Anastacia Siantar of The Brown Platform will also be selling alongside Cebu fashion bloggers and our very own top celebrities Divine Lee & Sarah Meier.

So, if you love blog-reading and blog-hopping, Bloggers United is sure to be the perfect end-of-summer bazaar for you. Not only will you be able to bump elbows with your favorite bloggers at the event, but you will also be able to snag some of their own stylish statement pieces as they open their closets to sell to the public. Stay-up-to-date with the biggest gathering of bloggers by following us on Twitter and Facebook, and bookmarking our official webpage.

Fill in the blank with your number one reason why ;) You can tweet as many as you want! Winners will be chosen randomly and will be announced on Saturday!

I know most people are there for clothes and shoes, but I asked over Twitter if people would be interested to buy books, and I got responses in favor of it, so yeah, I will be selling some of my books! I guess I gotta start letting them go as early as now heehee.

Feels like a good day for ice cream.

12 May 2012

We just came home from the church for Baby Gab's Christening, but we will leave again in an hour for my Aunt Jean and Uncle Rico's house blessing. I managed to squeeze in a post while my family is so busy around me mehehe.

It's so hot!!! Right now all I want to do is take a quick break and sneak off for ice cream... And then I remembered the ice cream party my blog friends and I had a couple of weeks ago care of Swensen's! They recently opened their newest branch in Eastwood and Angel tagged us along for The Ultimate Sundae Experience. Thanks Angel! :)

Sharing the photos with you guys to torture my already tortured (because of the heat heh) soul:

I really love the interiors because they remind me of vintage ice cream shoppes and diners :)

Aaah I want to swim in those tubs of ice cream.
Would you like to see the menu so you'll know how difficult I found it to choose which sundae to have? (Click to enlarge) :)

After much deliberation, I finally settled for this:

Frosted Choc Malt Fantasy ♥
Two scoops of chocolate ice cream with hot fudge, marshmallows, chocolate chips and Maltesers
Happy Krissy! :)
Ana, Sarah, and Angel
Paul, John and Aisa
♥
Thank you so much Swensen's! They also have a branch in SM Mall of Asia, with talks of expanding to other places, too. I can't wait to visit again with my family! I wish they open a branch closer to me, though ;)

Up in the Air and Underwater

11 May 2012

Alternatively titled: Trampolines and Underwater Scenes

"Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you.
And sometimes, when you fall, you fly."
- Neil Gaiman, The Sandman Vol. 6: Fables and Reflections

I just got home from an overnight stay in Piña Colina Resort in Tagaytay with my officemates for our team building. I had to commute on my own to Tagaytay yesterday (in a non-aircon bus as it was already the last trip of the day) because I needed to attend an event first, and it was one of the most stressful commuting experiences of my life; I had half a mind not to follow them anymore and just go home and rest, but I had to do it because I gave my bosses and my nice officemates my word.

I managed to squeeze in only a couple of hours' worth of sleep, and then I woke up early this morning so I could take a swim. I got home to my parents' house at almost 3 o'clock this afternoon, but I still didn't get to sleep because I had a lot of things to attend to, lots of pending stuff to finish. So many things to do, so little time to do them. Sigh. This weekend and the coming week is going to be packed and I don't know where I'll get the energy to face them.

"Anyone else feel like that? Like your life's a big act. Like you're trying to be a man when you're just a scared kid, trying to keep under control when you really want to scream, cry, maybe hit someone. Ever feel like you're breathing underwater, and you have to stop because you're gulping in too much fluid?"
- Alex Finn, Breathing Underwater

My eyes were shut tight in all my shots underwater because I was wearing contacts and I was scared they'd float away... Haha.

Right now there's nothing my body would appreciate more than a good, long, dreamless night's sleep. And yes, right now I am going to do just that. It sucks that I will miss a chance to hang out with my closest and oldest friends tonight (I was supposed to meet them at Dianne's house), but tomorrow will be a long day (Baby Gab's christening and my Aunt Jean and Uncle Rico's house blessing) and I don't want to faint anytime during the two ceremonies. So... goodnight, goodnight ♥

"It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you."

10 May 2012

"Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all humans read the book."

Good job taking the words right out of my mouth, Mr. Green. This perfectly describes my journey while reading The Fault in Our Stars. To think that I was hesitant to read it at first because I didn't finish Looking for Alaska as I thought it was too depressing. But this book, "I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, then all at once."

I was already almost halfway through the Kindle version I downloaded, but I loved it SO MUCH that I went out and bought a hardbound copy. I took my sweet time reading it, letting all the different emotions wash over me, and even then I found myself clamoring to read it again. Play Details in the Fabric by Jason Mraz featuring James Morrison while reading this, it's perfect.

It affected me so deeply and made me feel for Hazel and Gus, not only because I have a friend who is also sick, but because I share some of their sentiments I didn't even realize I had until I read them. They're fictional characters, yes, but there are millions of other kids all around the world who are also afflicted with life-threatening sickness, whose parents live each day in fear that they won't see their precious child again. It's unfair, really, but then again, "The world is not a wish-granting factory."

Funny and heartbreaking, The Fault in Our Stars is probably one of the most romantic novels I have ever read. "I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you." Oh Mr. Green, you do have a way with words. To find a love like that... That's the dream.

Reading this couldn't have come at a better time. I am actually going through something right now that forces me to evaluate how I treat myself and my relationships with other people. Sometimes I worry that I don't have too many friends, but then I realize I'd rather have a handful of (as my friend Ed said) core friends, instead of feel lonely in a room full of people who are just there when things are going great. Sometimes I get too busy trying to please other people that I forget myself in the process. Sometimes I get too naive and forget how easily some people can take their words back and rip me apart. I refuse to be trampled on though, because "You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world... but you do have some say in who hurts you."

Aside from the declarations of love that never border on being too mushy or too cheesy (although it can leave you wondering about how these teenagers already have a solid view on metaphorical resonances and the universe), what I loved most about the book are the little moments between Gus, Hazel, and their friend Isaac. United not only because of their sickness, they're real friends through and through.

We all need "cleanse" days. Whenever the stress and pressure get to me, I find that a good, long cry is all I need to detox and clear my head. Times like this, I only reach for either my copy or DVD of The Notebook. It has never failed me, but now I think I found my new companion for these "cleanse" days. "Okay? Okay." I can't wait.

"I'm on a rollercoaster that only goes up, my friend."

PS: The italicized text in quotation marks were all lifted from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

How to set a shopping budget for yourself

source

Money is tight for many people these days. The economic downturn has left many people without a job, dwindling savings, and less purchasing power. The price of food and other goods have risen along with the rising price of oil and transportation costs. This creates a need to make the most of the available money that you have. Here are some suggestions for how to set a shopping budget for yourself:

Budgeting Tips

  • Analyze Recent Grocery Bills – Tack stock of the items you have bought, particularly non-essential expensive items. Notice how long you were able to go between trips. It also would be helpful to plan out a weekly menu in advance. In seeing all of your purchases and expenses placed out for you to see, you can find ways to cut down.
  • Make Items From Scratch – Most food items are cheaper when they are homemade. Also, they usually taste better and are without preservatives and artificial coloring and sweeteners.
  • Limit Grocery Shopping to Weekly Trips – If possible, schedule a weekly shopping trip. You can set up meal plans and better plan for your budget, and also you save on time and transportation costs, compared to going multiple times each week.
  • Shop the Sales – Look in newspaper fliers for the store specials and use coupons. Many stores also have free member rewards cards for in-store discounts. For sales items with a longer shelf-life, buy them in larger quantities to save money on future trips.
  • Do a Cash-Based Grocery Budget – Using cash opposed to debit or credit cards helps control spending. If you actually have to physically have to count out your money you will be more apt to pay closer attention to what you buy. It serves as a hard spending cutoff.
  • Shop at Local Discount Stores – Some food producers, such as bread factories, have discount stores where you can purchase their food products at a fraction of the price. However, sometimes these items are close to or past their expiration date. You can rectify this by freezing any items that you don't immediately use.
  • Make the Most of Your Food – Save the leftovers from meals and use them throughout the week or incorporate them in other recipes. Use extra vegetables in soups or salads and use bread ends for croutons or stuffing.
