Life lessons in a paperback

09 June 2010

"The Bhagavad Gita - that ancient Indian Yogic text - says that it is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection. So now I have started living my own life. Imperfect and clumsy as it may look, it is resembling me now, thoroughly." - Liz Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love)
I write my favorite lines from the book in my krissyfied personalized notebook

I am halfway through reading Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love and I swear, this book has made a big impact on my life. It couldn't have come at a better time, too, as I started reading it when I was going through a very dark period in my life. It tells about Ms. Gilbert's travels to Italy, India and Indonesia as she seeks answers and attempts to find out more about herself. Simply put, it's a memoir about God and faith without being preachy, the human pursuit of pleasure, and finding the balance between the two. Reading it has been both an emotional and spiritual journey for me, to think that I am not yet even finished with the book. I can usually finish a book in less than a week, but this one, I am prolonging it as much as I can as I let myself be swept away in this personal journey. It is such a positive reinforcement. Please don't think I am exaggerating when I say the book has helped heal me.
"People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that's what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life." - Richard from Texas (Eat, Pray, Love)
"If you clear out all that space in your mind that you're using right now to obsess about this guy, you'll have a vacuum there, an open spot - a doorway. And guess what the universe will do with that doorway? It will rush in - God will rush in - and fill you with more love than you ever dreamed. - Richard from Texas (Eat, Pray, Love)
I read these lines, and my heart when pssssssh. All the hurt and resentment I've been feeling over my heartbreak seemed to dissolve, just like that. I hope Misses Pain, Depression and Loneliness won't go knocking on my door anytime soon.

The book has been made into a movie featuring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem and will be released on August this year. I've seen the trailer for more than 10 times but I still get goosebumps every single time. I first saw it when we watched Sex and the City 2, and I swear I teared up at the movie theater. The book has affected me that much.
"You were given life; it is your duty (and also your entitlement as a human being) to find something beautiful within life, no matter how slight." - Liz Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love)
Have you read this book already? If not, I highly recommend that you do so. :)

Introducing Lady Mirabou

08 June 2010

I realize this might make me sound a little too drama queenish, but ever since my three months-old camera and phones got stolen I felt a little incomplete, no kidding. I  bought a new phone a day after the unfortunate incident but it doesn't have a decent camera so I still wasn't able to snap pics using it. I've always been snap-happy, taking photos of random things so I dunno, all those times I felt like things are happening around me and I HAD to capture them. Add to that the  fact that I felt so crippled, blogging without a decent camera at my disposal. The solution? I got myself this when the end of May payday came:

Casio Exilim EX Z330
photo grabbed from Google Image search
I couldn't really take a picture of my camera with my camera, right? XD

I actually bought it two Fridays ago but never got around to posting it. She looks so pretty, right? Yes, my camera is a she. Her name is Lady Mirabou. I name my stuff because I'm adorably weird like that XD She's a 12.1mp camera with 3x optical zoom and features a 2.7-inch LCD. She's also so thin and sexy! Plus, she can take HD videos! (Do I smell a Vlog coming soon? :D) I especially love her Makeup Mode. Not that I (ehem) need it that much, but taking self-portraits in this mode is a charm as it automatically erases blemishes and other imperfections! Depending on the level settings, it's like my camera is my instant makeup artist as well as it can add foundation and blush on my self-portraits :D

I used Lady Mirabou on our Family Day and when we saw Sex and the City 2 and I couldn't be more satisfied with the quality of the photos we took using her. Having my stuff stolen was really tough, of course, but it was also a blessing in disguise as it let me have a camera that is loadsss better than the previous camera I had.

I also got a pretty camera case from e.g.g.
And here's a more decent photo of my phone Alexandra :)

I'm so excited to use her to take more photos! Lady Mirabou and I, we're going to be tight buddies! :D

Dear Lady Mirabou, please don't get stolen like Lord Fontaine, mmmkay?

A Piece of Me... in June 2010

07 June 2010

My personalized krissyfied notebook from PostScript Designs

This month...

I like that the rainy days have started to creep in! Don't get me wrong, I love summer and all its sunshines, but the rainy and cold weather we have been experiencing lately is a big reprieve from the sweltering heat that has bugged us (at least those of us living in my side of the globe) the whole of April and May and has even caused some of my lipsticks to  melt :(

I don't like that I have become more wary of thunderstorms and typhoons now after what my country experienced last year in the hands of Typhoon Ondoy (international name Ketsana).

I want you to know that I think I am ready to let love find me again. I updated my Facebook status last weekend with "basta ang gusto ko lang naman mabango at matalino eh :D" (all I really want is someone who smells good and is smart :D) and I was surprised that it attracted a plethora of comments. My friends want to see my heart happy :)

I've planned to start regaining control of my life again. I have been too complacent the past two months and whined and complained a lot. It is time to stand tall in my two high-heeled feet again and take charge. :)

I want to say to someone special all my friends who have demonstrated unwavering support on my dark days (and who did not talk smack about me like some people I know), thank you from the bottom of my pink, glittering heart. I am really blessed with awesome, true friends. :)

This is a game thought up by the Toothfairy so we can all share a bit of ourselves to our readers by completing a set of unfinished sentences every first Sunday of the month (I know I'm late by a day x_x Sorry, but my Internet connection yesterday was really crappy x_x). She is in a very long blogging hiatus but I still want to continue this monthly tradition she has started. If you read this by any chance Shirley, we miss you! I hope everything's okay with you.

It's Ladies' (plus one guy's) Night!

02 June 2010

I am not ashamed to say I love Sex and the City. I love the witty dialogues, the men, the friendship and love dilemmas, the sex fiascoes, and of course, the fashion! So when Dewi invited me to Velvet's advanced screening and after party that was held last Monday night, I couldn't have been more excited! Yes, Dewi is the same girl who invited me to the premiere night of The Lovely Bones. Aren't friends the awesomest? :)

She told  me I can bring one other person as she has four tickets (the other person will be Eden - our classmate and her best friend from college). The first person I thought of was my best girl friend Recks. Good thing she was free!

The invite says we have to come garbed in our New York City-chic outfits. I really did not want to buy any new clothes so I decided to choose among the black bandage dress I wore for our Holiday Party this year, a black corset top and sexy jeans, or the white and pink dress I wore for Project Barbie. In the end I chose the bandage dress, but instead of wearing the black pumps and fishnets I wore sexy strappy heels instead.

Monday came. Recks was a bit panicky earlier in the day as her driver suddenly decided to not go to work. Left with no other options (and as Eden backed out as well) Recks asked her boyfriend Ryan to drive and go with us instead. I went straight to her house after work to primp and prettify, just like what we did for Victorian Valentine last year.

I did my own hair and makeup :)

We met Dewi at Rockwell where the movie was screened. Yes, I walked through the mall dressed up in my party clothes but I didn't care :D

Dinner at Kenny's

my ticket :)

The movie will be shown in the Philippine soils today and I am not going to spoil it for everyone who hasn't seen it yet. Suffice it to say, even though the movie was slated by some critics, if you're a true-blue Sex and the City fan, you will love it. I loved it! Some scenes might have been OTT, but that's the reason why we love them films, right? For some form of fun and escapism, and who better to deliver it than Carrie's clothes, Samantha's quips, Miranda's toughness, Charlotte's idealisms and Patricia Field's styling?

Also I've always thought I am a Carrie and this movie somehow drives that to the point. Why can't my Mr. Big see that I am the best there ever could be for him? Pretend you did not read this.

Outfits!

Dewi, Recks, Krissy

♥♥

After the movie we headed to Amber UltraLounge at The Fort where the party was held.

we got lost XD

We finally found the club after about 15 minutes of going around The Fort. It was actually my first time to go to a posh club like that as I do not like clubbing that much, but I actually had a great time!

Photo 1: pretty crystal baubles hanging from the ceiling
Photo 2: we ordered french fries. Recks and Dewi had Cosmopolitans, Ryan had a bottle of San Mig Light, and I had a glass of Grape Crush. Dewi and I shared  a Strawberry Mojito. The Coke Zero in can was handed in at the entrance, together with Celeteque products in a bag :)

I swear, that Strawberry Mojito was so yummy! I am so going to learn how to make that :D
From what I can remember from the menu, it contains real strawberries and mint leaves, while the Grape Crusher contains crushed grapes, cranberry juice and mint leaves.

:)

I borrowed the L'Oreal mascara I used here from Recks' sister Michelle.
I wish I don't have to wear glasses so I can rock my thick lashes everyday.

This could very well be a cover of a Gossip Girl book
You're welcome, Cesily von Ziegesar

outfits: three ladies plus one

We went home a little after 1am. I am not a big fan of night-outs, but I really, really enjoyed this night! Best part of the night for me? Aside from the movie and catching up with friends and those sinfully addictive Strawberry Mojitos, it was when upon entering the club, the bouncer asked me for an ID. Apparently I look a bit too young to enter and par-tay. Winner moment! Thank you, Mr. Bouncer, for boosting my self-esteem.  :D

HSBC Family Day 2010: Summer Dash 'n Splash

It feels like I've been gone for so long! The last couple of posts were admittedly depressing and I am sorry for being such a downer. I am happy to say that my spirit has been uplifted this last weekend and things are certainly looking brighter for me. Be kind to me, June, please? :)

We had our Family Day last Saturday. It is the one day of the year where employees can invite their family and friends to the office and see what it's like to work for HSBC. Filled with games, activities, performances, prizes all capped with a concert by a local band, the day is guaranteed to be loads of awesome fun. The ones we had in 2008 and 2009 were so much fun so I had high expectations for this year's event.

The theme this year is Summer Dash 'n Splash. HSBC Commonwealth's grounds were divided into two sections: the wet and the dry part. Suffice it to say that you really needed to bring a change of clothes if you join the activities in the wet part :D

activity card with the raffle stub
I really am not lucky when it comes to raffles, such a shame as the prizes were all awesome!

my family, striking a pose with clowns and people on stilt sticks :D

my 4-year old cousin Jerico making his way out of the Web-Lock Alley

my Papa and sister Kyla in the game Crazy Arms
Kyla had to use her arms to feed Papa chocolate cake while they are both blindfolded :D

me jumping on the trampoline, fun! :D
I now wish I have a trampoline at home.

Executive Pachinko
all of them are HSBC's big bosses, and people just have to pay 20php for water balloons and 50php for colored water balloons and then drop them  at the pachinko, drenching the bosses :D
all the money goes to Jesus Loves the Little Children Foundation

outfit post
I wore the white jumper shorts which was Ana's birthday gift to me :)

Mich and I were asked to participate in the game Sponge Relay
those sponges were wet and heavy, but yay we won! :D

Mich and her bestfriend Apreal :)

the night was sweetly capped with a concert by local band Spongecola
they were amazing!

Vocalist Yael Yuzon almost made me fall in love with him :D
why do bands' vocalists look super ultra-hot while performing?

At 10:30PM, it's time to go home
Marsha with her nephews Ken and Andrei :)

This year's Family Day wasn't as grand as the two previous ones I attended, but I still had a jolly good time. It is nice to be in the office yet not think of work sometimes. :)

*All photos taken with my new camera. Yup, I finally got a new one to replace the one that was stolen! More about her in the next posts :)

Of friends and "friends"

30 May 2010

"Never explain yourself. Your friends don't need it and your enemies won't believe it."

First of all I would like to thank you all for your sweet comments and touching e-mails as a response to my previous post. Rick is right, there are a lot of people all over the world who cares for me. Thank you for cheering me up at a time when I really need it. My heart is still not in her perfect pink, glittering state, but at least she's not a black hole anymore. Thank you for making me feel I am not alone. Special mention also goes to my friends from the office Mich and Marsha. I thank God I have you as my friends. :)

Today's post is also about friendship.

Let me borrow Sylvia Plath's words, "I've got to admire someone to really like them deeply - to value them as friends." I place high value to my friends and if I consider you one, then rest assured that I will be a great friend to you. If I like you, I really really like you and I can gush all day about how much I appreciate you. On the other hand, if I don't like you (or you did something to me that made me lose my trust in you) then I won't stress myself in trying to foster a healthy relationship with you. The way I see it, it's better to ignore you than to pretend to be your friend and then launch a tirade against you when you're not there. I am not one to act all nice in front of you, then spread nasty things about you when you're not around.

A little bit something about how I relate to people around me: I've always been a transparent person who proudly and admittedly wears her heart on her sleeve. My emotions are very easy to read. I am emotional and sensitive, to a fault. As what Marsha and I have talked about last night, displaying a poker face is something both she and I cannot do. If I am upset about something, I am visibly upset due to my inner debate whether to tell the offending person or not. And yes, I end up telling him/ her that what he/ she did made me upset (in a nice and tactful way, of course). We talk about it, deal with it, and move on, like mature adults. As much as possible I try to get everything out in the open so the offense will not be repeated and we can all move on.

Because I am like this, I naively expected other people would treat me the same way. If I did something wrong or anything  that upset any of my friends, I would want them to tell me directly, in private, so I can do something about it. I am not perfect and I can be really stubborn sometimes, so when that happens I would prefer a telling off and a smack in the head than a stab at the back. Sadly, others take the cowardly way out and hide behind status updates in social networking sites. Ironic that I am posting it here instead of talking it out with the person, yes? Honestly I don't know how I am going to deal with it as I am still too upset to talk with the person.

I am not going to lie, it hurt and it made me really upset (and all this when I was just beginning to be cheered up again after my depressing post last week).  Doubly more so when I saw the person the next day, looking really happy to see me. When that happens, what do you believe? It's not so much as the words that were said as the pain of the "betrayal" I felt. Now I don't know how long the person's been holding a grudge against me, or if I have done anything else that made the person act this way towards me. I know that we can't really please everyone and someone is bound to not like us, but the way I learned of this, I felt like I was bitch-slapped. Twice.

What I learned from this "surprise"? I learned to value my true and real friends even more.
