Buy all the books!

The odd thing about people who have lots of books is that they always want more.

They say the way you spent the first few days of a new year is indicative of what the rest of your year will be like. Well, these are my first purchases for 2014:

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street edited by Robert L. Mack, 30th Anniversary Edition of The Princess Bride by William Goldman, and The Prestige by Christopher Priest
I got these from Avalon.ph, an online shop that sells brand new and second hand books, Fashionary, and Moleskine. They have an extensive selection that includes rare titles (case in point: I go to a lot of different bookstores all the time and never have I found a copy of Sweeney Todd in any of them) and even signed copies! Jasper is really accommodating and we had a very fast and smooth transaction. You may also check out their Facebook page here.

So, why these books? First, Sweeney Todd because I was obsessed with the movie. OBSESSED. I memorized all the songs and got myself original copies of the OST and the limited edition DVD with the booklet. In this day and age of torrents and digital piracy, that IS a big deal. The Princess Bride because I really loved reading it in my Kindle and the story is very special to me so I knew I must have a tangible copy. Lastly, The Prestige because I don't think I understood the movie completely when I saw it years ago, so I figured reading it might be more helpful.

Earlier today, this happened:

I got extra Paypal funds and instead of spending it impulsively on shoes or makeup, I used it in my favorite online shop instead - Book Depository. If there are books I want to read/ have but are not available locally (like the screenplays of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset), I buy from Book Depository instead. I love that they offer free shipping to anywhere in the world! I've purchased from them at least four times already and I haven't had a problem with them so far. Fingers crossed that the books I ordered today will reach me soon enough!

I got books based on webcomics: xkcd by Randall Munroe and Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh. xkcd is a "webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." I've been checking the site every now and then since I was in college! I don't understand everything Randall puts out (especially those about physics and trigonometry sheesh) to be honest, but those that I do get are pretty precious. I just thought it would be nice to have one in book form. As for Hyperbole and a Half, I've been following Allie Brosh's blog since I don't know when, and I've actually forgotten how I first found out about her site. All I know is that she's veeeery funny, and I always looked forward to her posts. When she wrote about her depression, my heart broke for her. I'm glad that she got this book deal and I am so excited to get my copy! If you are not familiar with Allie Brosh and her comics, she was actually the one who originated this drawing that has been turned into a meme since:

What I would really like to save up for now is the complete collection of volumes of The Sandman. My personal library will not be complete without it. (And by personal library I meant my room with its bookshelves and 'book towers' on the floor.)

  2. The author has discussed a very resourceful topic in times of the pandemic. We, as a nation, cannot keep our children out of schools forever. Hence a plan needs to be implemented where children can safely go to school without getting mass infected. However, it is not recommended for parents or children to go physically to the shops for book supplies. Hence there is a need for online book shops such as KitaabNow.
