Skin SOS: Human Nature's Pollution Defense

08 October 2018

Almost halfway through my daily 30-minute leisurely walk to the office two Fridays ago, with Jason Mraz’s latest album crooning in my ears, I hypothesized that maybe the reason why I am breaking out lately is because of the dirt and pollution I encounter walking along my usual Makati Avenue-Paseo de Roxas-Ayala Avenue route (and back again after work) every work day. Human Nature's Pollution Defense Mask line came to mind and I wondered whether I should get it. I frequent the site regularly to replenish my favorites (Strengthening PLUS Shampoo and Conditioner, Volcanic Cooling Body Scrub, and Lavender Mint Scented Cleansing Bar, among others) and I made a mental note to check reviews and order so I could see whether it would make any difference.

Lo and behold, I got to the office and this giant spider plant AND the items I was meaning to get were waiting for me!

What's a “perfect” day for you? For me it’s when the universe somehow conspires to throw little surprises my way. I knew Jen from the Human Nature team was going to send me something but I didn’t know it was going to be this soon and that she was going to send these, just when I thought about these products! What a great and much appreciated surprise!

Studies show that regular exposure to polluted air can increase hyper-pigmentation and wrinkles by 20%. Air pollution can increase free radical levels, overwhelm the skin’s repair process, and cause oxidative stress. Stressed skin shows more signs of skin aging like uneven skin tone, visible fine lines and dullness. We already know these, but what I didn't know is that indoor air pollution can be much worse than outdoor air pollution! According to the information sent to me by Jen, the European Lung Foundation reports that some pollutants may be 2-5 times more concentrated indoors. Air quality is poorer indoors because enclosed spaces let pollutants build up more than open spaces.

We had an office before that had poor ventilation and my officemates and I kept on alternating getting sick. I liked the location of that office but I am so glad we transferred.

Here are three things you can do to give your skin the breathing space it needs:
Sleep with Clean Skin
Polluted air contains particulate matter that is 20x smaller than our pores. These particles, which are found in smoke, dust and fumes, can be hard to wash off the skin due to their size.
Keeping skin clean at bedtime is vital to its overall health because skin cell turnover happens at night. If not washed away, dirt and soot on your skin can clog pores during cell turnover and lead to blemishes.
Pollution Defense Face Cleanser (Php 245, 100ml) is specifically formulated to target pollution particles. This refreshing cleanser is infused with the goodness of NaturProtect Actives: skin-refining bentonite clay, oil-absorbing bamboo charcoal, pollution-fighting moringa seed extract and passionfruit seed oil and vitamin E which helps combat the effects of free radicals. Use daily before toning and moisturizing to enjoy maximum beauty benefits.
Create a Better Barrier
Your skin is exposed to more dirt and grime than you think.
Bolster your skin’s natural barriers with Pollution Defense Hydrating Emulsion (Php 345, 50ml). Emulsions are lightweight, water-based moisturizers that are expertly formulated to keep skin smooth, healthy-looking and comfortably moisturized all day.
Each use delivers optimal hydration with jojoba, protects skin against air pollutants with moringa seed extract and restores healthy-looking skin with free radical-fighting passionfruit extract and vitamin E. After cleansing and toning, use Pollution Defense Hydrating Emulsion to stay protected from pollution all day and boost nutrient absorption at night.
Must-have Mask
Help your skin recover from long hours on the road by using a deep-cleansing face mask like Pollution Defense Face Mask (Php 450, 100g). Ideal for drawing out stubborn dirt and grime, using this creamy clay mask 1-2x a week can help revitalize your skin to glowing health.
It takes at least a month to completely see a product's effects but I wanted to share my initial impressions from using the line for the whole week last week.

Face Cleanser | Face Mask | Hydrating Emulsion
The Pollution Defense Face Cleanser has a thin consistency without being too runny. I was amazed by how cool it felt on my skin. I loved how it gave instant relief from my long days of working and running errands. My skin felt cleansed without feeling tight. Will Human Nature ever release a body cleanser version of this? Because I would like to bask in it, please.

Like other clay masks, the Pollution Defense Face Mask gets tighter on your face as it dries but it doesn't get warm. I loved putting this on in an air-conditioned room because like the Face Cleanser it really felt refreshing on my skin. It seemed to do an okay job deep-cleansing and pulling out dirt and grime from my skin although I'm not sure if it can do anything for my pores.

The Pollution Defense Hydrating Emulsion is just a teensy bit thicker than the Face Cleanser, and it moisturizes my skin without leaving it feeling greasy. I put this after my serum and it doesn't feel heavy at all.

Human Nature’s Pollution Defense line is genuinely natural and has no harmful chemicals. It is free of SLS, PEGs, dimethicone, silicone and synthetic fragrances. When you purchase from Human Nature, you are also supporting their core philosophies of being PRO-PHILIPPINES, PRO-POOR, and PRO-ENVIRONMENT.

Between meetings, Digicon, work to dos, and personal errands, whew, what a week the past week had been. This line couldn't have come at a better time! Due to its cleansing and refreshing properties, I can really say the Pollution Defense Cleanser is a great self-care ally. I love how I was able to easily integrate these products into my existing skincare routine, substituting only the cleanser I was using prior. I am excited to see more results in the next coming days!

Have you tried this line yet? What are your favorite Human Nature products?
