ComicCon Asia 2018: Tourism, Entertainment, and Homegrown Talents

02 October 2017

The year's not over yet, yet I'm already looking forward to March 2018! It's because ComicCon Asia, a newly-formed regional convention that aims to go beyond your average fan experience, is slated to happen on March 24 and 25, 2018 at the SMX Convention Center.

I took J to the Bloggers' Night hosted by the organizers of ComicCon Asia last week and we were given a brief introduction on how the event was conceptualized as well as a short teaser on the attractions that will be offered for us fans during this two-day shindig.

Backed by the combined expertise of PSL and Nam Entertainment Group, ComicCon Asia is being spearheaded by Event Producer Pauline Sofia Laping, Business Development Consultant and StartUp Village Founder Jay Bernardo, and Program Director/ multi-awarded writer and cartoonist/ Filipino creative advocate Hugo "Boboy" Yonzon.

When asked why they felt they needed to create another event seeing as how our country has been enjoying a lot of other conventions lately, they answered it is for tourism, entertainment, and to showcase homegrown talents. According to them, ComicCon Asia was "created as an event to showcase Filipino, and Asian, talent, and apart from international and regional celebrity guests, there will be plenty of industry panels. It is not just a meet-and-greet with famous actors and actresses, it is also a proper industry con where one can learn from the people behind the scenes: the artists, creators, and producers."

Speaking of showcasing talents, more special events will be held in the meeting rooms upstairs—industry talks, panel discussions, and workshops with experts: One-Shot is a chance to present ideas to the biggest names in the industry. Attendees can hope to get projects produced, get job offers, or just show their portfolio of work. Auction Hero is where collectors can bid on some of the more serious collectibles available: limited edition items, rare finds, and exclusive signed merchandise. The Great Filipino Graphic Novel contest will have veteran comic artists review original work in order to produce a truly Filipino work of comic art. The Trading Guild is where one collector’s junk becomes another collector’s treasure, where they can swap unwanted items to finally complete their collections.

The main floor will be divided into five zones: Manga & Anime, Comics, Toys & Gaming, and Movies, Series, & Animation, and Cosplay—five quadrants of vendors, sellers, galleries, and artists. The main stage will be set up right in the center, so people won’t miss a thing while they explore the many different booths and alleys. Around the main stage will be a ring of booths called the Cosplay Circle, with backdrops and other cosplay-related merchandise. Cosplay Match-Up, a cosplay competition that evens the playing field for international, Filipino, gaming, and anime cosplayers, will also be held throughout the two-day event.

Aside from Yael Yuzon who reportedly made a comic book for his wife Karylle, the organizers haven't confirmed any guests yet. I guess we'll just have to watch out for official announcements over at their website and Facebook Page.

One thing they confirmed though, is that Manny Pacquiao is absolutely not funding ComicCon Asia. Being one of the most famous Filipinos due to his boxing career, he was selected as an ambassador for the event, but failed to clarify things at the media interviews resulting to a massive backlash. He is a Senator, after all. Nevertheless I think it's too early to pass judgment at this event so I'd hold and wait a little bit longer for more announcements and more information. I can already say though, looking at the goals they are aiming to attain, that I would definitely want to attend ComicCon Asia 2018.

P.S: My boyfriend and I are conceptualizing a new website that will contain toy news and reviews, wish lists, shopping hauls—basically anything that concerns toys. We hope you can watch out for it and give it the same support you've been giving krissyfied.com! ♥
